WORLD AND EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SLOVENIA 2017

The time has come. The bags are packed, licences checked one last time, passports & tickets all present ready and correct....... World Championships and European Championships, the FIGHTING IRISH are on their way.

Paul H, Ged, Robbie, Ryan, John, Dessie, Peter, Niall and Paul C are going to represent Ireland in Rimfire Benchrest Shooting. All this has been financed by themselves with no Governmental or Sporting Body support. Yet they wear the Green White and Gold very proudly.

We would like to wish them all the very best for the week of fantastic competitive shooting that's ahead of them in some quite hot temperatures. Today Thur - they hit 35C so the mirage is going to be great fun - we don't get to play in that often in this wet and windy country!

New friendships will be made, old ones revisited and memories that they will hold onto forever, especially the younster. Ryan, have a fantastic time and shoot well.

PS - DON'T FORGET THE BOLTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sharon.

PPS bring home the medals! (no pressure)

Hi Guys,

Half way through the year but not even near half way Through the shooting year for us.

Our next event is as we like to call it, is 'THE BIG ONE'. This is our Nationals; incorporating this year an International flavor. Some of you will realize that there is an Ireland v's UK Challenge cup in existence which Ireland currently hold. It was competed for last year in Germany in October. This has not been competed for in Ireland for quite a few years.

THE BIG ONE ; is being held in Harbour House on the 15th and 16th of July next. It will start with Factory Sporter in the Morning of the 15th followed by International Sporter and then Light Varmint in the afternoon. On the 16th we will have Heavy Varmint along with the Ireland UK Challenge cup, finishing shooting around 2:00.

YOU NEED TO REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT, as we will be drawing for benches and times, places may be limited. In order to Register all you need to do is send an email to Sharon at secretary.nrbai@gmail.com. Sharon will be able to reply with your times and bench number for each detail. They will also be printed and posted on the Morning of the shoot.

THE IRELAND UK CHALLENGE CUP, will be shot over 3 cards in HV. There are nine members on each team. The combined total score will be added and this will determine the winner. The winners will each go away with a trophy and the Cup; the losers.....well nothing.

The Teams are as Follows

IRELAND ------ Ryan Rafter, Robbie Rafter, Paul Hayes, John O'Suillivan, Paul Cassidy, Niall Duff, Ged Quinn,Peter Deaton and Dessie Owens. ((Team travelling to Slovenia)

UK/NI------------Ronald Harding, Colin Evans, John Almond, Carl Hanson, Maurice Hassard, Philip Cartwright,Francis Tumelty Richard Sysum and James Mathews.

EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS and WORLD CUP,   We are fast approaching this competition, as this is held only every 4 years it is a huge event, possibly the largest yet in History. Approximately 28 Countries are competing with over 200 shooting in each class. Only 5 weeks to go to this event, wishing our team every success.

On another note this years NASRPC International is being held in The Midlands shooting grounds. In order to facilitate this large event all the Concrete Shooting benches have been removed. As these are the only suitable benches for Rimfire Benchrest it will be very difficult to nearly impossible to shoot from the existing wobbly light wooden benches. The concrete benches will be reinstated after the event we have been informed.

NEW NRBAI VIDEO; Have a look out over the coming days for a new promotional video (You Tube and Facebook) which has been produced by us. This work was organized by our development officer Niall Duff and a great thanks to his work and the support of our sponsor EVG who funded 50% of this video.

REMEMBER REGISTER FOR THE BIG ONE

Jim O' Neill Memorial Shoot Sunday 18th June 2017.

Well the day has come and gone and friends old and new came together to remember Jim Jnr and his love of Benchrest Shooting.

The weather was fabulous, no wind - just the way Jim hated it

The hosts, Harbour House, Dee, Toby, Tommy, Maura, Elle, thank you all for allowing us the use of your facilities on the day and for feeding the masses. I'm sure they all appreciated it.

To our shooting friends across in the Gallery Rifle Range - thank you for coming to this to lend your support to a great cause.

And then you go and do something even more - you donated €750 of your competition takings from Saturday to our fundraising. It was totally unexpected and more than welcome and we will be letting the beneficiary, Epilepsy Ireland, know of your donation. So thank you so much for this again GRPAI.

Another donation that was received came from Paul Hayes through his company to the value of €500. Thank you Paul. Again so appreciated.

Over €2,500 was raised in all and this be forwarded to Epilepsy Ireland.

Along with the shooters, we have to thank the RO's (Jim O'B & Anthony), the stats keepers (Ged, Paul & Des). Jim O'Brien for the lovely plaque which he made in Jims' memory. (Can be seen on Range 2)

Marianne. Thank you for presenting the Memorial Crystal Trophy to Paul Cassidy and all the medal winners too, 2nd Sean Taylor and 3rd Paul Hayes. 1022BR - 1st Declan Byrne, 2nd Mark Nolan, 3rd Anthony O'Shea.

Most importantly of all, we'd like to thank Jim Snr. Thank you for letting us do this in honour of your son. We wouldn't have had it any other way.

Jim Jnr will always be part of us.

Sharon

THE BIG ONE!!!!

So it's been and gone - what a whirlwind weekend of shooting we've had.

31 shooters over the two days.

FS - 12
IS - 11
LV - 11
HV - 16

A total of 100 cards scored.

2,500 rounds of ammunition went down the line, not including sighters and a couple of double taps !!!

We were lucky that it remained dry for the two days, but the wind was, as usual, playing a blinder and upsetting some applecarts.
Good sport was had by all.

I'd like to thank a few people for making this possible.
1. The RO's who did a great job in keeping the lines running so smoothly and on time.
2. The Harbour House Facility and the O'Brien family for again hosting us this year and keeping the spirits up with the grub both Sat and Sun. It was much appreciated.
3.Our sponsors of our Perpetual Trophies - EVG Eventures Group, Peli Products Ireland, Hilltop Shooting Sports, & Harbour House Sports Club.

This year, we had a new trophy for the highest X count on 2 cards in any category. This was sponsored by Sprint Design.

FS - 13 - Noel Kennedy
IS - 16 - Will Danaher
LV - 21 Paul Hayes and Peter Deaton
HV - 23 Des Owens, Jim O'Neill and Ryan Rafter.

1st miss was on target 2 for 2 shooters and was the decider.

Trophy for 2016 x count goes to Dessie Owens.

Champions for 2016 are
Factory Sporter - Noel Kennedy
International Sporter - Robbie Rafter
Light Varmint -Paul Hayes
Heavy Varmint - Dessie Owens.
Both LV & HV scores came down to 1st miss.

Well done to all who took part this year.

See you on the line again on 27th August in MNSC.

Regards

Sharon & the Committee of the NRBAI.

The first 'Introduction to Benchrest' course was held today for members of Harbour House by the NRBAI.

It was a great success with many people taking part and with great assistance by Niall Duff and Peter Deaton. 5 new members have joined the ranks of the NRBAI and we hope to see Kevin, Brian, Gavin, Liam and Sean on the range soon, maybe even tomorrow 19th June.

We hope to hold more of these soon around the country and many thanks today for the invite from Harbour House.

NEWS

NEW SCORING SYSTEM

Many of you may not be aware but a new ‘electronic’ scoring system had been purchased by Robbie and his team just lately. We will introduce this as soon as possible this year but it will take some time. This new system will scan (using an A3 flatbed scanner) the score cards directly into a computer program and give us the results. This system was used very successfully at the World championships last year in Australia and is being used in many of the countries across Europe at present. This will require new targets as the new targets have colours as can be seen below. It will speed up scoring and improve accuracy.

(I believe the target is similar to the target below)

MEMBERSHIP

Membership is open to any member of a recognised shooting club in Ireland. The membership will be a nominal amount of € 20

and will entitle the ‘Membership’ to certain privilages as follows.

1 They will be part of the NRBAI ranking table.

2 They will be entitled to represent Ireland on the national team.

3 They will get regular updates and information from the NRBAI

4 They will be entitled to vote at the AGM and become a member of the council.

5 Membership cards will be issued.

It is hoped that members will pay this fee if at all possible at the next shoot at the end of the month (29th of May) in Hilltop.

JACKETS / POLO SHIRTS

These can still be purchased by shooters, you do not need to be a member. Once a sufficient number on requests are made an order would be placed.

National Ranking 2016

From the AGM it was left to the Committee to decide on how many ‘shoots’  will be used for ranking. The ranking is of significant importance this year as it will be used for eligibility for the European Championship in Slovenia in 2017.

The standing system allows for the dropping of 15% of the years shoots.

There are 9 planned shoots for the NRBAI this year, which will not change.

It was decided that the ranking will be based on your best 6 from these 9 shoots.

SPONSOR

I would like to thank E.V.G. Eventures for their continued sponsorship and support.

International Sporter Specification changes

The European (ERABSF) and World (WRABF) bodies for Rimfire Benchrest shooting have agreed changes to the specifications for the International Sporter rifle as follows:

a)  International Sporter is any sporter rifle having only manually and mechanical operated mechanism.

Maximum weight is not more than 8.5 lbs (3.855 kg), inclusive of scope and magazine (if used).

Barrel weights, harmonic tuners, bullet stabilisers or barrel stabilisers are not permitted.

Any scope may be used but with maximum magnification of 6.5x. Scopes with more magnification power will have to be taped in place at 6.5x for the duration of a match.

The barrel action can be bedded and have the trigger mechanism reworked or replaced.

Barrel must be made of one piece of metal with no attachments except for the action nut to secure the barrel to the action. The original sights may be left in place but not added to or changed in any way.

Stocks that meet the “Stock Clarification” rules may be used.

Return to battery shall not be permitted.

No electronic assisted triggers allowed.

b)  Stock Clarification.

The action may be glued into the stock. The stock must be 2.25 inches (57.15mm) or under at its widest point. Fore-end and butt of stock that comes into contact with front and rear sandbags may be flat or convex.

Following representations to NRBAI, and through NASRPC, from benchrest shooters who are concerned that their standard factory issue sporter rifles will not be adequate to compete with this revised specification, particularly for new entrants to the sport, NRBAI and NASRPC have jointly agreed a solution for National Competitions in Ireland.

Within the Sporter class we will introduce a second sporter classification to cater for standard factory hunter rifles which are currently used by the majority of shooters here.

This additional classification will be called the “Factory Sporter”.

c)  Factory Sporter is any sporter rifle having only manually and mechanically operated mechanism.

Maximum weight is not more than 8.5 lbs (3.855 kg), inclusive of scope and empty magazine.

A bi-pod may be used but must be included in the maximum weight allowance of the rifle.

Barrel weights, harmonic tuners, bullet stabilisers or barrel stabilisers are not permitted.

Any scope may be used but with maximum magnification of 12x. Scopes with more magnification

power will have to be taped in place at 12x for the duration of a match.

The barrel action can be bedded. Barrel must be made of one piece of metal with no attachments

except for the action nut to secure the barrel to the action. The original sights may be left in place but

not added to or changed in any way.

The ammunition must be magazine fed with a minimum magazine capacity of 2 rounds.

Only stocks that meet the “Stock Clarification” rules may be used.

Return to battery shall not be permitted.

No electronic assisted triggers allowed.

d)  Stock Clarification.

The action may be glued into the stock.

The stock must be 2.25 inches (57.15mm) or under at its widest point.

Fore-end and butt of stock that comes into contact with front and rear sandbags must be convex. Convex will be determined by placing a coin or other circular disc measuring 22mm on the stock.  The outer edges of the disc (coin) cannot come in contact with the stock. There must be a visible space underneath the outer edges of the disc (coin).

The stock cannot be modified by the addition of pieces or sections which change its original shape.
